Kaplan's appointment comes shortly before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. Clegg, a former leader of the UK Liberal Democrats and former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK, joined Meta in 2018 and has since led the company's global policy organization.

During his tenure, Clegg played a key role in addressing important issues such as Facebook's content policies and elections. He also took on a significant role in the establishment of the company's independent content oversight board. Kaplan, as Clegg's successor, is expected to take on these responsibilities in his new role as global relations head.
