"Extension Alert: '6 Months - 6,000 Kilometers' Program Deadline Extended to July 1st"
The Ministry of Trade announced the extension of the "6 months - 6 thousand kilometers" regulations until July 1, 2025. This step was taken to combat speculative price increases and stockpiling activities in the automotive sector.
The statement from the ministry emphasized that regulations are being meticulously maintained to ensure a fair and competitive structure in the automotive market. The aim is to prevent the direct or indirect marketing of used vehicles before 6 months or 6 thousand kilometers have passed from the date of first registration. Additionally, advertising at a price above the recommended current price has also been restricted.
Severe monetary penalties have been imposed. The ministry indicated that serious administrative fines have been applied in case of violations of these regulations. To date, approximately 52 million TL in fines have been imposed on authorized car dealers and auto galleries, and around 90 million TL on those who did not comply with the advertising restrictions.
The 6 months - 6 thousand kilometers and advertising restrictions have led to beneficial outcomes in preventing speculative price increases and stockpiling, as well as in avoiding unfair profits and consumer grievances. For these reasons, it has been decided to extend the regulations until 2025.
The regulations also apply to both authorized and unauthorized sellers. Notaries will continue to block the sales of individuals selling three or more used motor vehicles without a trading authorization certificate.
Moreover, under the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, the Insurance Supervision and Private Pension Regulation Authority (SEDDK) has been granted the authority to determine the insurance duration. Starting February 1, 2025, businesses selling used vehicles will be required to have a minimum of 60 days of traffic insurance.
The Ministry of Trade aims to achieve price stability and establish a fair market structure by regulating the trade of motor vehicles. It has also stated that additional measures will be taken if deemed necessary. The ministry will continue its efforts to establish a balanced structure in the market resolutely.
