Announcement from TURKSTAT on the Inflation Basket

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) issued a press statement following the remarks made by the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel, regarding the inflation basket. TÜİK highlighted that items such as ping pong balls and copper rods are not included in the inflation basket, emphasizing that these claims are inaccurate and misleading.

TÜİK emphasized that the inflation calculation is based on a basket composed of goods and services that households consume the most. This basket, which includes basic food items such as bread, milk, eggs, meat, tea, vegetables, and fruits, as well as regular household payments like rent, electricity, natural gas, water, and phone bills, consists of a total of 406 items as of 2024.

Content of the CPI basket TÜİK stated that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket used to determine the inflation rate is defined in accordance with international norms and standards. It noted that the list of goods and services used for CPI calculations is transparently published on TÜİK's website, accessible to everyone.

In the press statement, it was emphasized that the data collection and processing methods employed in the CPI calculation processes comply with the European Statistics Application Principles. TÜİK reminded that it adheres to the principles of accessibility and transparency in all published statistics, stating the necessity of providing technical information to prevent misconceptions within society.
