Environmental Protection Expenditures Reached 224.6 Billion TL
In 2023, environmental protection expenditures amounted to 224.6 billion TL. According to the announcement made by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), environmental protection expenditures increased by 56.8% compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 224.6 billion TL. Of these expenditures, 66.8% was incurred by financial and non-financial corporations, 28.1% by non-profit organizations serving the general government and households, and 5.1% by households.
In terms of corporate sectors, 63.3% of environmental protection expenditures were spent on waste management services. Additionally, 14.7% went to wastewater management services, 8.3% to the conservation of biodiversity and landscapes, 5.4% to the protection and improvement of soil, groundwater, and surface water quality, 2.7% to outdoor air and climate protection, and 5.6% to other environmental protection issues.
In 2023, environmental protection investment expenditures totaled 38.2 billion TL, reflecting a decrease of 14.9% compared to the previous year. Of these investment expenditures, 77.5% was made by financial and non-financial companies, while 22.5% was made by non-profit organizations serving the general government and households.
The share of environmental protection expenditures in gross domestic product (GDP) was 0.85%. While the proportion of environmental protection expenditures in GDP was 0.95% in 2022, it decreased to 0.85% in 2023.
