Garanti BBVA Cards and POS Devices Boost E-commerce Shopping by 101% in November
Foreks - Garanti BBVA (BME:BBVA) Payment Systems (GÖSAŞ) has released research data regarding transactions made with Garanti BBVA cards through Garanti BBVA POS devices during November, which has become a "shopping month" accompanied by discount campaigns on various platforms.
In a year that has increasingly seen established phrases like "Great" or "Legendary November," "Legendary Friday," "Black Friday," and "Cyber Monday," online shopping once again hit record levels. During this busy shopping period, GÖSAŞ's research, which examined e-commerce expenditures, shed light on the sectors where consumers spent the most and highlighted spending trends and sectoral changes compared to November of the previous year. According to GÖSAŞ's data, e-commerce expenditures in November increased by 101% compared to the previous year. Additionally, while e-commerce spending accounted for 31% of total card expenditures in November 2023, this share rose to 34% in November 2024.
This November, the sector with the largest increase in spending was "Furniture-Decoration." In this year's shopping month of November, consumers made the most significant expenditures in online shopping in the Furniture-Decoration sector, reflecting a 110% increase compared to the previous year. This sector was followed by a 99% increase in Cosmetic expenditures and a 93% increase in Clothing and Accessories.
Half of our e-commerce transactions were made in installments. According to GÖSAŞ's research, in November this year, the turnover of cash e-commerce shopping made with Garanti BBVA cards increased by 97%, while the turnover of installment purchases also increased by 107% year-on-year. 53% of e-commerce transactions were made in cash, while 47% were installment purchases, indicating that consumers preferred to make half of their transactions in installments.
Consumers preferred installments the most for Cosmetic expenditures. With attractive campaigns, those who opted to meet their needs with installments seized November opportunities, focusing heavily on installment shopping in the Cosmetic sector, which saw a 164% increase compared to the previous year. In installment e-commerce shopping, Clothing & Accessories rose by 104%, and Electronics by 103%, following the Cosmetic sector.
The increase in shopping rates for female and male consumers was similar. With the support of campaigns, during November, when e-commerce shopping volumes peaked, female consumers increased their spending by 99% compared to the previous year, showing the most interest in the Furniture-Decoration, Cosmetic, and Electronics sectors, respectively. Male spending also rose by 101%, with preferences for Furniture-Decoration, Clothing & Accessories, and Accommodations among male consumers.
Bursa and Kocaeli were the cities with the highest increase in e-commerce shopping volume. According to GÖSAŞ's data for November 2024, the provinces where e-commerce spending increased the most compared to the previous year were Bursa (127%) and Kocaeli (122%). They were followed by İzmir (103%), Ankara (101%), and Istanbul (97%).
