Investment in Solar Power Plant Begins at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport
Foreks - Parking areas at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport are being covered with solar energy panels. Once the project is completed, it is aimed to meet 25% of the airport's annual energy needs with solar energy.
The construction of a solar power plant in the parking areas managed by TAV Airports (IS:TAVHL) has begun. The project will involve three phases of work in both indoor and outdoor parking areas, with a total installation of 10,200 solar panels. The solar power plant, which is planned to be completed by April 2025, will have a capacity of 5.9 MW. An annual energy production of 10 million kWh is targeted, and this production is expected to reduce emissions equivalent to the yearly usage of 660 households, totaling a reduction of 4,592 tons.
Erkan Balcı, General Manager of TAV Ege, stated, “İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is the first airport in Turkey to receive an eco-innovation award and is certified as carbon-neutral under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. As TAV Airports, we aim for all our operations to be carbon-neutral by 2030 and to reach net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. With the solar project we have initiated, we will significantly increase the use of renewable energy at Adnan Menderes Airport.”
To minimize the impact on airport operations, the project will be carried out in three phases. In the first phase, the fourth floor of the domestic terminal parking garage will be closed, in the second phase, the outdoor parking areas for both domestic and international flights will be closed, and in the third phase, the fourth floor of the international terminal parking garage will be closed in a controlled manner for passengers' use.
Passengers can access information about the process through informational posters and directional signs located in the airport. Updates regarding the project can also be found on the adnanmenderesairport.com website and the airport's social media accounts. Passengers with questions about parking usage can get support through the parking information center or communication lines on the website.
İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport served 9.9 million passengers in the first 10 months of 2024, marking an 8% increase compared to the same period last year.
