Opposition in South Korea Proposes Bill for President Yoon's Impeachment

South Korean lawmakers introduced a bill on Wednesday for the removal of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared martial law and then reversed the decision hours later, triggering a political crisis in Asia's fourth-largest economy. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) called for Yoon, who has been in office since 2022, to either resign or be removed from office. Six other opposition parties in South Korea subsequently submitted a bill to parliament for Yoon's dismissal, with voting set to take place on Friday or Saturday. DP lawmaker Park Chan-dae stated, “It has been clearly shown to the entire nation that President Yoon can no longer govern the country normally. He should resign.” There have also been deep divisions within Yoon's ruling People Power Party, with party leader Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun calling for his dismissal and the resignation of the entire cabinet.
