Opposition Party in South Korea Calls for President Yoon's Resignation or Impeachment

The main opposition party in South Korea has called for President Yoon Suk Yeol to resign immediately or face removal from office. Yoon did not respond publicly to the opposition's demand right away. However, a statement from his office indicated that Yoon's senior advisors and secretaries collectively offered to resign, and the President postponed his official schedule for Wednesday morning.

To remove Yoon from office, support from two-thirds of the parliament or 200 out of 300 members is needed. The Democratic Party and other smaller opposition parties together hold 192 seats. However, when the parliament rejected Yoon's declaration of martial law by a vote of 190-0, according to National Assembly officials, 18 lawmakers from Yoon's ruling People Power Party voted against this.

If Yoon is removed, his constitutional powers will be taken away until the Constitutional Court makes a decision regarding his fate. The Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, who holds the second-highest position in the South Korean government, will assume presidential responsibilities.
