Volkswagen Employees to Stage Warning Strike on Monday
Volkswagen employees will go on strike next week following disagreements with union leaders on how to reduce costs amid a slow electric vehicle market and intense competition. A spokesperson for the IG Metall union stated that workers will begin warning strikes on Monday, expecting members to refrain from work for a few hours each day. The spokesperson mentioned that the duration of the strike will depend on how subsequent negotiations progress.
Volkswagen employs approximately 300,000 workers in Germany and operates 10 factories in the country; the strike, set to begin on Monday, will affect around 120,000 employees at factories and some subsidiaries in Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, Hannover, Salzgitter, Emden, and Kassel.
A contractual obligation preventing the workers from striking will expire on November 30. The last round of talks between Volkswagen and the union ended without an agreement, and negotiations are scheduled to resume on December 9.
