Brisa Participated in COP29 Held in Azerbaijan This Year

Brisa, a pioneering company in sustainability in both Turkey and the global arena, participated in COP29 held in Azerbaijan this year, as a joint venture between Sabancı Holding and Bridgestone Corporation. Aylin Erdil Alpsan, the Director of Sustainability Business Development, shared Brisa’s sustainability strategy and innovative approaches as a speaker in two different sessions. Alpsan spoke at the panels 'The Role of Energy Efficiency in the Energy Transition' at the Turkey Pavilion and 'The Scope 3 Challenge: Decarbonization Across Industries' at the UN Global Compact Pavilion.

Brisa's sustainability strategy includes a strong infrastructure based on its legacy and innovative approaches grounded in continuous improvement. Starting in 2005 by tracking carbon emission data, Brisa has been transparently sharing its environmental, social, and economic impacts through CDP and sustainability reports since 2011. With this strong accumulation, Brisa tracks and acts upon its carbon emissions based on the Science-Based Targets framework.

In alignment with a stringent scenario to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees, Brisa aims for a 56% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 2030. It takes a pioneering role as the first company in Turkey to have its goal approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative across all sectors and in the global tire industry. Also, Brisa has committed to approving carbon reduction target commitments on behalf of its suppliers for Scope 3 emissions by 2028, focusing on collaborations throughout the value chain.

Innovative Technologies for Renewable Energy Transformation In her speech, Alpsan emphasized that Brisa's 2030 vision contains a robust strategy for reducing its carbon footprint, stating, “Energy transformation is essential for decarbonization. To ensure this, we have a science-based target and a decarbonization roadmap that will help us achieve our goal. We focus on increasing renewable energy sources within our total energy consumption. Utilizing new technologies during this transition phase is very important to us. Of course, just completing a project is not enough; the key aspect is the effective application of these technologies in production processes. Heat pump technology is a good example of our application success. By using heat pumps at our Aksaray factory, we are reducing our natural gas consumption by 17% annually. With our project, we won first place in the Energy Efficiency Project category of the Istanbul Chamber of Industry Green Transformation Awards,” she noted.

Strong Collaboration within the Value Chain and Science-Based Targets Commitment by 2028 Highlighting the importance of collaborating with suppliers to reduce emissions in the value chain, Alpsan stated, “11% of our Scope 3 emissions come from the goods and services we purchase. We are committed to having our suppliers, which account for 79% of emissions in this category, set science-based reduction targets by 2028. This year, we achieved 45% of our target. We are undergoing a significant cultural transformation in our value chain. We are conducting projects with our prioritized suppliers based on financial, climate, and water risks. Every supplier we engage with is very open to collaboration. With more cooperation, we will create opportunities and reduce emissions with a larger group of stakeholders. Our overall impact will be much greater.”
